Modern archaeological excavations date the first settlement on the site of Kharkiv city to the 2000 BC. The year 1630 (1654-1655, the other sources) considered as Kharkiv founding date, first settlers, cossacks (according to another version - migrants from the Right-bank Ukraine) established a settlement and a fortress to protect against Tatar raids on ruins of the ancient stronghold. According to the most common version of the Kharkiv's name origin is Kharkiv named same with local river name. According to the popular folk version of the origin of the Kharkiv's name is associated with the name of cossack Kharko - a hero of numerous legends and stories. Modern Kharkiv is one of Ukraine's largest industrial center, among are dominate industries: metallurgy, food processing, light industry. The city successfully operating enterprises of the defense complex: State-owned company Malyshev Factory, Kharkov armored factory. Kharkov's main square, Square of Liberty, is the sixth-largest in Europe, one of the oldest universities in Ukraine - V. N. Karazin Kharkov National University located here.
